Content Creation: Re-Purposing
As a small business owner using social media to market your business, you have a lot of content to create. Providing your followers with valuable content keeps you front-of-mind and gives your audience a chance to interact with you. However, you have a business to run and don’t want to spend all your time making content for social media. One helpful way to provide your audience with valuable content without working yourself to the bone is re-purposing content. Here’s what you do:
Video
First off, you’re going to want to film a video on a topic of your choice. Choose something that relates to your business and that you feel comfortable talking about for 10 minutes. You can announce a new product, provide tips and tricks, or educate your audience on something related to your business.
Make sure the video is between 4-10 minutes in length. This ensures that your audience doesn’t get bored, but that you still have enough content to work with as we continue this process. Once your video is filmed and edited, post it to YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram (through IGTV). If your business is on all three of those platforms, you can upload the whole video to YouTube and a few minutes of it to IGTV or Facebook. Just make sure that when you cut shorter clips for IGTV and Facebook, you keep it between 2-3 minutes and direct your followers to YouTube to see the full video. If you only post to one platform, there’s no need to cut it down any.
Clips
This step only applies if you didn’t post the video to Instagram or if you have a TikTok account. If it doesn’t apply to you, scroll to the next step!
Once you have the video filmed, edited, and posted somewhere, you can take 3-4 clips that are under a minute long and post them to Instagram or TikTok. Make sure these clips make sense on their own and still offer value to your audience. You can direct viewers to your full-length video or just share the clips on their own!
Blog
Next, take the video and either pay to have it transcribed or do it yourself. Then format it into a blog post for your website. Blogs are a great way to position yourself as an authority and offer value to your readers. They also help a lot with SEO and improving your rank in search results. Once the post is published to your site, share the link to Facebook, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.
If you don’t feel comfortable filming a video, this is your first step! Write a blog post relevant to your business that gives your audience valuable information, or have someone write the post for you. Share the link with your audience on Facebook and LinkedIn and move on to the next step.
Excerpts
Next, you’re going to look through your blog for 3-4 short excerpts. Make sure they’re under 280 characters. They need to be informative and make sense on their own. These excerpts can then go on Twitter! You can choose one from each of the main points of your blog post and make a thread, or chose a standalone quote that you think works as a Tweet. For this post, I would take a line or paraphrase from each main point and make a thread on re-purposing content for social media. Then you can direct your followers to the blog post, video, or both.
Infographics
Lastly, take the key points from your blog post and create a series of infographics for Instagram or Facebook. Make sure there are 10 or fewer individual graphics and post them together with a caption directing people to your blog post. You want these graphics to fit your brand guidelines, so consider using something like Canva to make them look good.
In the end, the most important thing to remember about re-purposing content is that it’s supposed to make your life easier. Especially in times like these, mental health needs to be a priority. You can make content for a whole week just by making one video or blog post into a bunch of different social media posts. This doesn’t have to take more than a few hours a week, so get your social media content created and posted, and get on with running your business!
