Rooted In Possibility
The holiday season is finally here, and while it can be a wonderful time of love and community, we also know that corporations have really commercialized these special months. With opulent parties and trying to find presents for everyone you’ve ever met, the pressure to spend and provide can bring up a lot of fears around financial insecurity. The constant reminders to buy gifts, prepare for gatherings, and celebrate in ways that often emphasize material abundance can make us feel stretched thin or even inadequate if resources feel limited. Yet, this season also offers a unique opportunity to shift our relationship with abundance by setting intentional goals around what abundance truly means to us.
With the New Moon coming up, we can focus on planting seeds of genuine prosperity, creating space for fulfillment that goes beyond material wealth. By setting intentions of abundance now, we can begin to gently release scarcity and replace it with a trust in the Universe and ourselves, allowing us to enjoy these sacred times with those we love.
What is Scarcity Mindset?
If you haven’t heard the term already, scarcity mindset is a description of the beliefs we hold that stem from fear and insecurity, especially around money or material goods. It’s the subconscious belief that there isn’t enough, and it can be really destructive to our psyches. When we focus on what we don’t have, we begin to think that everyone else is competition, that we’ll never have the things we need, that we’ll never feel secure. A lot of us learn this mindset from our parents or other influences when we’re young, and carry it with us for years.
One thing that has always kind of bothered me when I hear people talk about scarcity mindset is that a lot of the time, the people telling me not to worry about my finances were people who didn’t need to worry about their finances! It felt absurd at the time, listening to people tell me that I need to trust more and believe that my needs will be met from their fancy house with their seemingly charmed life. Of course, my reaction itself is indicative of a scarcity mindset, that jealousy seeping into my mind, assuming that it’s easy for this other person just because they have more material possessions than I do.
Recognizing and addressing scarcity mindset doesn’t have to mean striving for perfection, especially when financial fears are in play. Our paths to security will all be different, and can often be marked by moments of imbalance—of pushing too hard, overextending, or staying in high gear to avoid financial strain. Sometimes our efforts to feel secure can pull us out of sync with our own needs, creating tension between rest and ambition. For many of us, this dance is familiar, and the idea of feeling secure when our financial needs aren’t being met can feel impossible.
Instead of chasing the illusion of perfect balance or wealth, cultivating a sense of “enough” means learning to recognize and appreciate what we already have—even during times of struggle. Feeling like we have enough doesn’t mean ignoring our needs or challenges, but rather finding moments of contentment and gratitude for the resources, relationships, and support around us. This isn’t about dismissing financial goals but about reclaiming peace in the present, understanding that our worth isn’t measured by what we own or earn. By focusing on the value of what’s already within reach, we can begin to shift from a mindset of lack to one of quiet abundance, where we know that while things may be tight, we’re still whole, supported, and capable of creating and accepting more.
Tarot Guidance
When I did my tarot spread a while back about this month’s message, I pulled the King of Pentacles reversed. The King of Pentacles, when upright, represents wealth, stability, and grounded success—someone who has mastered the flow of resources and embodies a strong sense of security. However, when reversed, the King of Pentacles reflects the shadow side of abundance, where fear of financial instability or feelings of inadequacy arise. He reminds us that a scarcity mindset can often be rooted in a deep-seated fear of not being “enough” or not having “enough.”
These fears can lead us to overemphasize control, focus excessively on material success, or cling too tightly to what we already have, ultimately restricting our ability to grow. This reversed King challenges us to ask: How does scarcity affect our daily decisions? Are we clinging to control or self-limiting beliefs that prevent us from fully embracing new opportunities?
Astrological Influence
Astrology can offer another layer of insight when we explore our connection to abundance. By examining the Second House and Jupiter’s influence in our natal chart, we can gain perspective on how scarcity or wealth manifests in our lives. The Second House is the astrological house associated with resources, values, and self-worth. Planets here reveal our core beliefs about money, security, and what we value in life, and challenging planets (like Saturn or Pluto) in this house may indicate fears around scarcity or a tendency toward self-limitation.
Then there’s Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth. Jupiter’s placement can reveal where we are naturally open to abundance and joy, and how we attract prosperity in our lives. Jupiter reminds us that abundance isn’t just about accumulation; it’s about cultivating a relationship with the world that is generous, hopeful, and grounded in gratitude. By leaning on Jupiter’s expansive qualities, we can open ourselves to a mindset of wealth and believe in the flow of resources in our lives.
Healing Scarcity and Accepting Abundance
Reimagining abundance means looking at wealth as more than just material gain—it’s a journey of realizing that life’s resources flow in many forms, from supportive relationships to spiritual fulfillment. When we imagine a life beyond scarcity, we are invited to think expansively, to feel the freedom that comes with trusting in ourselves and the Universe.
This is a practice of nurturing our worth and a deep belief that life supports us in every way. Instead of judging ourselves for the financial fears we hold, we can approach them with curiosity, learning where they originate and how they influence us (which we’ll be looking at in future weeks). Dreaming of a life free from scarcity is an act of self-compassion, one that allows us to move forward without judgment or doubt.
Questions to ask yourself this week:
How can I nurture a mindset of prosperity and welcome the flow of resources into my life? How can I embrace a fresh perspective on abundance and trust that stepping into the unknown will bring me what I need?
This lunar cycle, we’ll be breaking down the origins of our scarcity mindsets and addressing our fears with compassion and love. I’ve been lucky to have amazing support in my journey of unlearning scarcity, and I’m excited to be that support for you. Despite financial struggles, I’ve been healing and accepting abundance, and I’m here to share the idea with you that things don’t need to be perfect for you to have a mindset of abundance!
